The Indian Hills Community College athletic department has recognized Jamel Allen (basketball) and Abby Straight (softball)as February’s student-athletes of the month. This accolade honors student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding work in their respective sport and in the classroom.
Allen, a sophomore from Brentwood, New York, averaged 11.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 1.2 spg in helping the Warrior basketball team to an undefeated month of February and capping off the team’sregular season record at 30-0. The 6-7 forward helped catapult the Warriors to a number one national ranking, the program’sfirst time atop the national poll since the 2013-14 season. Allen shot an impressive 48% from the field, while knocking down 13 three’s at a whopping shooting percentage of 45% during the month of February. During his tenure at Indian Hills, Allen has 573 total points and has helped the Warriors to a 59-5 overall record. “Jamel has been a major part of our success the last two years. He’s a hard working kid that will do his best at anything he’s asked to do in the classroom, on the court, or in the community,” remarked head coach Hank Plona. The two time academic All-Region student-athlete has signed to play his final two years at UMKC, where former assistant, Josh Sash, is currently an assistant coach. Jamel hopes to continue his outstanding play as the Warriors enter the month of March with their sights set on a trip to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA DI National Basketball Tournament.
