The Indian Hills Community College athletic department has recognized Jamel Allen (basketball) and Abby Straight (softball)as February’s student-athletes of the month. This accolade honors student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding work in their respective sport and in the classroom.
Straight, a sophomore pitcher from Logan, Iowa, was a force on the mound and at the plate for the Indian Hills Warrior softball squad during the month of February. The native Iowan averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game, while carrying a .433 batting average with 14 RBI’s, 4 homeruns and 3 stolen bases to propel the Warriors to a notable 11-2 record. Straight was a member of the 2016-17 squad that won region and district titles, advancing to the national tournament. The College of St. Mary’s (Omaha, NE) signee has equally impressive numbers in the classroom. Straight has maintained a 4.0 GPA during her time at Indian Hills and will pursue a career in occupational therapy. “Abby is a fabulous representative of the Indian Hills softball team on the field, off the field and in the classroom. All of her hard work is paying off,” said head coach Laura North. The Warrior softball team will enter a busy month of March that includes their home-opening doubleheader on Wednesday, March 14th against St. Charles Community College, beginning at 2 p.m.
