Ottumwa, IA – No. 13 Indian Hills Men's Basketball secured its fourth consecutive victory to open the new year with an 85-75 victory over Malcolm X College (IL) on the opening night of the RV & PowerSports Classic at the Hellyer Center.
Sophomore KJ LaMonte (Davenport, IA/New Mexico Highlands) powered the Warriors with a team-high 17 points while sophomore Chaz Watson (Kansas City, MO/Cleveland State) poured in a season-high 13 points on three three-point shot. Redshirt-freshman Javeyn Martin (Anderson, SC/T.L. Hanna) sparked the offense off the bench with a career-high 10 points to go along with five rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Warriors held the Hawks to just 5-17 shooting from three-point range while outrebounding Malcolm X 45-37, including an 18-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The Warriors used their size to outscore the Hawks 50-30 in the paint and used a 15-3 advantage on second-chance points to pull away.
Indian Hills forced a season-high 23 turnovers as LaMonte posted a season-high five steals in the win.
Freshman Xavier Wilson (Kansas City, MO/Staley) came off the bench to tally eight points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Warriors. Wilson added a pair of steals to fill the stat sheet.
Indian Hills is back in action Saturday afternoon for the final day of the RV & PowerSports Classic at the Hellyer Center with a matchup against No. 20 preseason ranked John A. Logan College (IL) at 3:30 PM. The Volunteers dropped their opening matchup at the Hellyer Center Friday night to No. 8 ranked Coffeyville Community College (KS) 77-69. Coffeyville and Malcolm X will match up in the early game Saturday at 1:00 PM.
