Ottumwa, IA – No. 3 Indian Hills Men's Baskteball kept its winning streak alive in convincing fashion Wednesday night as the Warriors rolled past visiting Mineral Area College 87-54 at the Hellyer Center. The Warriors improve to 25-2 overall on the year.
Indian Hills has now secured 13 consecutive victories, the nation's third-longest active winning streak. The win also pushes the Warriors' winning streak at the Hellyer Center to 25 consecutive victories, tied for the longest streak since the program won 41 straight from 2016-2018.
The win avenged the Warriors' most recent loss which came against Mineral Area back on December 13 in Park Hills, MO. Indian Hills improves to 11-7 all-time vs. the Cardinals, and 8-0 all-time at the Hellyer Center.
Sophomores Chaz Watson (Kansas City, MO/Cleveland State) and Ater Manyuon (Austin, MN/We Are United Prep) led the way on offense for the Warriors with a game-high 14 points each. Sophomore Chiang Ring (Minneapolis, MN/Murray State) added 13 points while Mason Costello (Waukee, IA/Waukee) and Taj Au-Duke (Toronto, Canada/Pepperdine) each chipped in 10 points for the Warriors.
Indian Hills shot an impressive 30-37 from the free throw line, tied for the most free throw attempts in a single game this season. The Warrior offense took care of the ball throughout the duration of the game, committing just eight turnovers against the Cardinals. Indian Hills also won the rebounding battle in dominant fashion with a 44-33 margin.
The Warriors fell behind early as Mineral Area built a quick 8-4 advantage in the opening minutes. Indian Hills took over from that point forward, going on a 12-0 run to pull away and never looked back. Ring scored 11 of his 13 in the opening half, including a three-point shot in the closing seconds of the opening frame to give the Warriors their largest lead of the half, 41-31 at the intermission.
Indian Hills continued to pressure the Cardinals throughout the early stages of the second half and pushed the lead to 21 on a lay-in from Vladyslav Semeryc (Horishni Plavni, Ukraine/Cherkasy) at the 11:33 mark. The Warriors connected on 15-18 free throws in the second half alone to pull away and secure the non-conference victory.
Sophomore KJ LaMonte (Davenport, IA/New Mexico Highlands) filled the stat sheet for the Warriors with seven points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists to go along with two steals. Semerych and freshman Xavier Wilson (Kansas City, MO/Staley) each added seven rebounds in the win for the Warriors.
Next up for Indian Hills is a trip to Dixon, IL to take on Sauk Valley Community College (IL) at 3:00 PM Saturday afternoon.
