Oxford, AL – The Indian Hills Softball team opened up play at the JUCO Extravaganza at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, AL with a split on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors dropped Snead State Community College (AL). 12-7 in the opener before falling to Jones College (MS) 15-14 in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Warriors move to 3-7 overall on the year with the afternoon split. The offense pounded out 24 hits on the day, including 15 in the opener vs. Snead State, the team's highest output of the year.
Indian Hills fell behind early in the opener vs. Snead State as the Parsons took a quick 4-0 lead in the opening frame. The Warriors responded with six runs of their own in the top of the second thanks to back-to-back doubles from Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) and Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead). Hickenbottom and Houselog added RBI knocks in the third to extend the lead to 8-6.
Leading 8-7 entering the fifth, sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski) delivered a two-run single to give the Warriors some comfort in the scoring column. Freshman Kendall Davros (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) added a two-run single in the sixth to cap the scoring for Indian Hills and give the Warriors the win.
Davros finished the opener 3-4 at the plate with three RBI while Hickenbottom collected a pair of hits to go along with two runs and a career-high four RBI.
Sophomore Hannah Carter (Bethany, MO/South Harrison) picked up the win in the circle with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Carter struck out a pair of batters without allowing a hit.
The Warriors found themselves in a back-and-forth thriller in the nightcap vs. Jones as the Indian Hills offense continued to click at the plate. The Warriors took advantage of a number of Bobcat miscues and free passes to stake a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning. Jones plated four runs of their own in the third before Indian Hills pushed back with three runs in the bottom half.
Indian Hills scored at least one run in the next four frames, but Jones was able to chip away at the deficit. Trailing 14-13 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Indian Hills once again capitalized on a Jones error to tie the game and force extra innings. The Bobcats eventually struck in the top of the eighth and held the Warriors scoreless to steal the victory.
Freshman Sophia Revallo (Metamora, IL/East Peoria) finished the contest 3-5 at the plate with two runs scored while sophomore Avery Kies (Iowa City, IA/Regina Catholic) delivered a 2-4 performance, including a home run for the Warriors.
Indian Hills returns to action Friday at the JUCO Extravaganza with a pair of matchups vs. Jones and Shelton State Community College (AL).
