Shawnee, KS – The Indian Hills Softball team swept the day at the Midwest College Classic on Friday, earning a 14-1 win over Northeast Community College (NE) and a 13-5 win over State Fair Community College (MO). The Warriors improve to 5-13 overall on the year with the sweep.
The Warriors produced their most efficient display at the plate on the year, racking up 27 runs on 26 hits. Indian Hills saw four multi-hit performances in the opener vs. Northeast and five more in the nightcap vs. State Fair. The Warriors produced at least seven runs in a single inning in each ends of the twinbill.
Indian Hills erased an early 1-0 deficit in the opener vs. Northeast with a pair of runs in both the second and third frames. Sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski) delivered a two-run home in the second inning to put Indian Hills on the board.
Leading 4-1 after four, the Warriors poured it on the Hawks with three runs in the fifth thanks to a three-run home run from freshman Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) before putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the top half of the sixth, including a home run from sophomore Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead).
Hickenbottom finished the opener 2-4 at the plate with three runs and four RBI while Benberg, Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley) and Bailey Tegeler (Dixon, IL/Dixon) each added two knocks apiece.
Sophomore Maggie Grant (Onaway, MI/Inland Lakes) was solid in the circle for the Warriors, allowing just one earned run through four innings of work. Hickenbottom added two stellar frames in relief, allowing just one base hit to cap the win.
The Warriors put game two out of reach early as Indian Hills erupted for eight runs in the second inning to take an early 9-0 advantage. A grand slam from Houselog delivered the knockout punch early for the Warriors.
Freshman Gabby Lane (East Peoria, IL/East Peoria) added a two-run double in the fifth while Houselog tallied a run-scoring triple in the sixth.
Houselog closed out the day with a 2-4 performance with five RBI while Madisyn Buysse (Geneseo, IL/Geneseo) and Tegeler each went 3-3 at the dish. Lane and fellow freshman Sophia Revallo (Metamora, IL/East Peoria) each added two hits for the Warriors.
