Ottumwa, IA – Indian Hills Softball picked up an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) sweep at R.L. Hellyer Field on Sunday, dropping Southwestern Community College 10-9 and 10-2. The Warriors move to 16-18 overall on the year and 3-1 in league play.
With the sweep, the Warriors move into a tie for first-place in the ICCAC with their 3-1 league mark, matching Southeastern Community College's identical record. Indian Hills has now won three consecutive contests while improving to 6-2 overall at R.L. Hellyer Field this year.
The Warriors erased an early 1-0 deficit in game one with a four-run third inning. Sophomore Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley) provided a two-run single in the third to put Indian Hills on the board before Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) added a two-run knock for a 4-1 advantage.
The Spartans chipped away at the lead, but Indian Hills added two more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-RBI knock from Bailey Tegeler (Dixon, IL/Dixon) and an RBI from Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead).
Southwestern strung together another rally in the sixth, scoring five runs to even the game at 8-8. The Warrior offense stepped up once again in the home half of the sixth as freshman Sophia Revallo (Metamora, IL/East Peoria) brought home two runs on a hard hit single up the middle. Hickenbottom, who entered the game in the circle in the fourth, held off a Spartan rally in the seventh for the victory.
Tegeler finished the opener 4-4 at the dish with two RBI and two runs scored to go along with three stolen bases. Hickenottom, who earned the win in the circle, helped her own cause with three hits while Houselog and Withers each added two hits.
Indian Hills jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first in game two and never looked back. Houselog, Withers, and Hickenbottom each tallied run-scoring hits for the initial lead. The Warriors tacked on two more runs in the fourth and a pair in the fifth on solo home runs from Withers and sophomore Mary Monothsmith (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial).
Sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski) delivered the final blow, a solo home in the sixth for the run-rule shortened victory. The walk-off hit was the second in as many days for Benberg.
Tegeler added a 3-3 performance to cap a 7-7 day at the plate in game two, including two doubles while scoring three runs and another stolen base. Houselog, Withers, and Monosmith each added two hits in the finale.
Sophomore Hannah Carter (Bethany, MO/South Harrison) went the distance in the circle, scattering four hits with just one earned run.
Indian Hills is back in action April 3 with an ICCAC doubleheader at Marshalltown Community College.
