Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski) of the Indian Hills Softball team has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Softball Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Benberg helped power the Warriors to a sweep in its lone doubleheader last week, taking down ICCAC foe Marshalltown Community College 10-2 and 17-2 at R.L. Hellyer Field on Sunday. Benberg proved to be the offensive catalyst in the two wins.
Benberg posted a .715 batting average across the two wins for the Warriors, going 5-7 at the plate with a pair of extra base hits. The sophomore tallied six RBI and five runs scored in the sweep.
In the opener, Benberg delivered a second inning home run, her team-leading eighth roundtripper of the year to push the Warriors past the Tigers. Benberg followed up with a 3-4 performance in game two, including four RBI and four runs scored.
The sophomore has now hit safely in 11 of the team's last 12 games, batting .564 during the stretch with four home runs and 20 RBI.
The Warriors will now head to Burlington, IA to take on Southeastern Community College in an ICCAC doubleheader for the regular season finale on Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors will look to sweep the Blackhawks and potentially earn the No. 2 overall seed in the upcoming National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 11 Tournament. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
