Centerville, IA – Following a monumental win at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) North Central District Championship, sophomore Naasir Edmonds (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) of the No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week.
Edmonds secured the Warriors' second consecutive team District championship, and second consecutive individual District title with a thrilling victory in the 285lb championship matchup Sunday in Mason City, IA. Edmonds becomes the first-ever 285lb wrestler to repeat as a District champion for the Warriors.
Competing as the No. 2 overall seed in the national qualifying event, Edmonds cruised to the championship round with back-to-back pins. The sophomore earned an opening round fall in 2:33 before punching his ticket to the finals with a pin in 1:18 in the semifinals.
In the championship bout against top-seed and No. 1 nationally ranked Zaman Anwar of Iowa Central Community College, the Warriors needed a victory to surpass the Tritons in the team standings and capture the title. All square at 1-1, Edmonds secured an impressive three-point takedown with 38 seconds remaining to seal the victory and earn the top spot on the podium.
Edmonds, who also earned the District title as a freshman last season, earned an automatic bid to the upcoming national championship in Council Bluffs, IA March 6-7.
