Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Soccer squad put together a valiant effort against No. 7 nationally ranked Navarro College (TX), but fell short 2-1 on the final day of the IHCC Classic.
The Warriors put together an impressive showing against the Bulldogs, a team that made it to the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Women's Soccer National Tournament a year ago. Indian Hills held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 54 minutes of action before Navarro hit paydirt with a goal on the counter attack.
The Bulldogs, who ranked third in the nation in goals scored last year, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute after scoring from close range. The Warriors continued to threaten, controlling possession for a majority of the second half.
The Warriors' persistence paid off in the 81st minute as Alexia Bru (Barcelona, Spain/Vall d'Hebrón) found the back of the net on a penalty kick. The goal was the first of the year for the sophomore and fourth career tally.
Indian Hills' late push for an equalizer fell short in the closing minutes as Navarro escaped with its first win of the year.
Sophomore keeper María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela / Aragua Estudiantil) stopped six shots in the loss for the Warriors.
The Warriors return to action August 31 in Council Bluffs, IA with a neutral site contest against Western Nebraska Community College.
