Centerville, IA – No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling remained unbeaten in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) dual action with a 32-21 victory over No. 4 ranked Iowa Western Community College.
The Warriors secured seven of the 11 bouts on the night to run past the Reivers, avenging a loss to Iowa Western in the last matchup between the two perennial national contenders. The Warriors earned three falls, along with a tech fall to surge past Iowa Western and move to 5-0 overall in the ICCAC this year.
Iowa Western opened up the night with an initial victory at 103lbs only to see defending national champion Ariah Mervilus (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown), ranked No. 1 in the nation, put the Warriors on the board at 110lbs with an impressive fall in just 52 seconds of mat time.
The Reivers picked up back-to-back victories at 117lbs and 124lbs before freshman Kaylea Beauchamp (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville) halted the skid with a dominant 12-0 tech fall at 131lbs. Fellow freshman Jasmine Wolfe (Sedlia, MO/Smith-Cotton), ranked No. 4 in the nation, earned an 8-4 decision at 138lbs to keep the Warriors within striking distance 16-12.
Iowa Western pulled ahead once again, 21-12 after a fall in the 145lb match to put the Warriors on upset alert.
With just four bouts remaining, the Warriors leaned on defending national champion Nevaeh Hayden (Tulsa, OK/Union) at 160lbs as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation secured a fall in 1:00 to cut into the deficit, 21-17.
Following a Reiver forfeit at 180lbs, the Warriors secured the victory at 207lbs thanks to sophomore Ileen Castrejon (Beach Park, IL/Zion-Benton Township) who earned a pin in 3:45 that brought the crowd to their feet. Castrejon pushed the Warriors ahead 27-21 before a forfeit victory at 235lbs sealed the night for the Warriors.
Indian Hills improves to 4-1 all-time vs. the Reivers.
Next up for Indian Hills is a trip to Fremont, NE on January 31 for the Midland Warrior Open.
