Ottumwa, IA – No. 2 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Soccer secured a top-10 victory over No. 9 Miami Dade College (FL) on the final day of the IHCC Classic Saturday, knocking off the Sharks 2-0 at the IHCC Soccer Complex.
The Warriors move to 2-0-0 on the year after completing a clean sweep of the IHCC Classic with wins over (RV) Otero College (CO) on Thursday and Saturday's victory over Miami Dade. Indian Hills outscored their opponents 9-0 to open up the new year.
In a matchup of two squads that both qualified for the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Men's Soccer National Tournament, the Warriors and Sharks battled to a scoreless first half in Ottumwa. The Warriors saw a pair of scoring opportunities in the 33rd minute from Joseph Redmond (Basingstoke, England/Basingstoke Academy) and Diego Lazaro (Laval, Canada/Horizon-Jeunesse), but to no avail.
The Warriors finally hit paydirt in the 63rd minute as sophomore captain Alessandro Peruz (Calalzo di Cadore, Italy/Enrico Fermi) scored his second goal in as many matches, heading home a free kick from Lazaro to put Indian Hills on the board. The Warriors wasted no time in doubling its advantage as Enzo de Almeida (Foz do Iguacu, Brazil/Colegio Silva Batista) took advantage of a Shark turnover and lofted a shot past the outstretch arms of the Miami Dade keeper for the 2-0 edge.
Freshman keeper Matteo Malaguti (Mantova, Italy/Liceo Isabella d'este Mantova) and the Indian Hills defense kept the Sharks scoreless the rest of the way as the Warriors held on for the top-10 victory.
The Warriors have now won 16 contests vs. nationally ranked opponents over the last four seasons, including eight wins over top-10 teams.
The Warriors will hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Council Bluffs, IA to take on Barton Community College (KS) in a neutral site contest at Iowa Western Community College. The Cougars are receiving votes in preseason NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Poll.
