Council Bluffs, IA – With less than six minutes to play, freshman Enzo de Almeida (Foz do Iguacu, Brazil/Colegio Silva Batista) found the back of the net to give No. 9 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Soccer a 1-1 draw with No. 1 Iowa Western Community College on Wednesday. The Warriors move to 6-2-3 overall on the year.
The Warriors earned the tie with the Reivers in the first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup between the two nationally ranked foes. Wednesday's match proved to be the sixth nationally ranked matchup for the Warriors this season, and second consecutive matchup vs. a top-five opponent.
After a scoreless opening first half, the Reivers struck first with a goal at the 48:41 mark of the second half on a loose ball in front of the Warrior net. The two sides traded opportunities throughout the next 36 minutes of play before Indian Hills tallied the equalizer. de Almeida corralled a loose ball near the sideline and beat a series of defenders before unloading a strike from 30 yards out to the far corner to beat the outstretched arms of the Iowa Western keeper.
Both sides continued a valiant push for the game-winner over the next five minutes of play, but to no avail as the ICCAC matchup ended in the draw.
With the lone goal on the night, de Almeida now leads the Warriors with eight goals on the year which ranks within the top-25 in the nation.
Freshman keeper Matteo Malaguti (Mantova, Italy/Liceo Isabella d'este Mantova) stopped a season-high seven shots on the night to earn the result.
The Warriors will now head to Hays, KS for a neutral-site matchup vs. No. 13 nationally ranked Dodge City Community College (KS) Sunday, October 12.
