Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore Joseph Redmond (Basingstoke, England/Basingstoke Academy) provided the heroics as No. 12 Indian Hills Men's Soccer knocked off No. 1 nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College at home on Wednesday. The Warriors hand the Reivers their first loss of the season.
Redmond's strike in the closing minutes of play lifted Indian Hills to 7-3-3 overall on the year while giving the Warriors the upper-hand in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) standings with a 1-0-1 record while the Reivers drop to 9-1-5 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
In a thrilling match of two national semifinalists from a year ago, the Warriors came prevailed in the closing minutes as Redmond found the back of the net at the 87:25 mark of play. Sophomore Leo Jaukovic (London, England/Fulham Boys School) beat a series of defenders before finding a streaking Sakutaro Matsuura (Aichi, Japan/Kaishu Gakuen JSC) near the Reiver endline. Matsuura delivered a well-placed strike that found Redmond's foot in traffic. Redmond fired a shot from close range that beat the outstretched arms of Reiver keeper Oliver Hutchins for the eventual game-winner.
While the match ended with just the one goal, the Warriors positioned themselves with numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match while holding the Reivers at bay. Indian Hills outshot Iowa Western 19-6 on the day, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.
Redmond's goal proved to be the sophomore's third game-winning goal of his career, but first in a one-goal match. Redmond has now tallied seven goals, including five this season, throughout his Indian Hills career.
Freshman keeper Matteo Malaguti (Mantova, Italy/Liceo Isabella d'este Mantova) stood tall behind a dominant defensive presence from the Warriors. Indian Hills blanked Iowa Western for the first time in seven matches and earned its first win over the Reivers since a 2-0 win in 2023.
The win is the fourth over a nationally ranked opponent this year for head coach Zac Newton and the Warriors.
Indian Hills returns to action this Saturday with a trip to Jefferson College (MO). Action from Hillsboro, MO gets underway at 2:00 PM.
