Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Men's Track & Field team garnered a pair of Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) honors on Tuesday as sophomore Tate Joens (Cedar Rapids, IA/Cedar Rapids Prairie) and freshman Nichalas Power (Riverton City, Jamaica) were named ICCAC Athletes of the Week.
The duo helped lead the Warriors at a pair of separate events over the weekend. Joens lands his fourth ICCAC Athlete of the Week honor this year after a record-breaking performance at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, IA while Power starred at the Arkansas Spring Invitational in the 800-meter run.
Joens set two school records for the Warriors on Friday. The sophomore shattered both the shot put and hammer throw records with a pair of personal-best performances. Joens placed fifth overall in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 59.13m while adding an eighth-place finish at the NCAA DI event in the shot put with a mark of 17.48m.
Joens, a four-time school record holder, ranks second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) this year in the hammer throw while boasting the third-best shot put mark in the nation. The sophomore also ranks in the top-10 nationally in the discus.
Power put together the top mark in the nation this year in the 800m run with a time of 1:48.41, the third-fastest time in school history and the 15th best time in NJCAA history. Power's time was good enough for third overall at John McDonnell Field, placing only behind Morocco's Mehdi Yanouri and Oklahoma State University's Hafez Mahadi.
Power has now been named the ICCAC Athlete of the Week twice this year.
The Warriors are back in action this weekend at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, KS. Action gets underway Thursday at Rock Chalk Park.
