Gabriela Avila Diaz, Women's Wrestling

Freshman Gabriela Avila Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Bautista De Puerto Nuevo) of the Indian Hills Women’s Wrestling team has been named the Indian Hills Hy-Vee Female Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of March.

Diaz capped a remarkable freshman season with an individual national championship to help lead the Warriors to the program’s sixth consecutive national team title. Diaz put together one of the most dominant runs of the entire tournament as the freshman did not allow a single point in five matches at the Mid-America Center. Diaz, who outscored her opponents 44-0 throughout the tournament, became the program's first-ever 124lb national champion.

In addition to Diaz’s performance on the mat, the freshman was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American for the Warriors.

Each month, with the support of the local Ottumwa Hy-Vee, the Indian Hills Athletic Department selects a male and female student-athlete of the month based on their academic and athletic performances throughout the previous month. Fans can catch interviews of each student-athlete from Ottumwa's South Hy-Vee on the GoHillsTV Facebook Page.
