Sophomore Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) of the Indian Hills Men’s Wrestling squad has been named the Indian Hills Hy-Vee Male Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of March.

Whitehead starred for the Warriors in the postseason, capturing his second consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship, the first repeat champion in program history. Whitehead ran through the 141lb bracket in Council Bluffs to help lead the program to its second consecutive national team title, setting an NJCAA record for team points with 201.5.

Whitehead capped a remarkable two-year career for the Warriors as the sophomore was tapped as The Open Mat NJCAA Wrestler of the Year. Whitehead’s efforts in the classroom were also recognized with National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American honors.

Each month, with the support of the local Ottumwa Hy-Vee, the Indian Hills Athletic Department selects a male and female student-athlete of the month based on their academic and athletic performances throughout the previous month.
