Mattoon, IL – The No. 17 nationally ranked Indian Hills Volleyball squad ran its winning streak to 10 matches after sweeping its way through the Lake Land Tournament. The Warriors took all three matches, winning nine of the 11 sets played.
The Warriors opened up action Friday afternoon with a hard-fought five-set victory over host Lake Land Community College (IL) before dropping Southwestern Illinois Community College in straight sets. Indian Hills closed out the weekend on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Frontier Community College (IL) to move to 10-3 overall on the year.
Since dropping its opening three matches of the year, the Warriors have rattled off 10 consecutive victories, winning 30 of 34 total sets played during the run. The winning streak is tied for the third-longest for the program over the last six seasons.
In the opener vs. Lake Land, the Warriors went back-and-forth with the Lakers, dropping the opening set 25-23 before taking set two 25-22. Lake Land went on top with a 25-15 victory in set three, but the Warriors battled back to stave off the defeat with a 27-25 win in set four. The Warriors prevailed down the stretch, taking the finale frame 15-10.
Sophomore Piper Nelson (Atkins, IA/Benton) powered the Warriors with a career-best effort. Nelson tallied personal best marks of 14 kills and 17 digs to lead Indian Hills to the come-from-behind victory. Freshman Ayana Ito (Tokyo, Japan/Fujimura) produced a career-best effort as well with 12 kills. Aleksandra Oles (Tomaszów Lubelski, Poland/1 LO Tomaszów Lubelski) tallied five aces without an error for the Warriors while fellow sophomore Asialin Powell (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) added 18 digs.
The Warriors rolled in their next two matches, dropping Southwestern Illinois 25-19, 25-17, and 25-23 and Frontier in straight-sets 25-11, 25-13, and 25-21.
Nelson added another strong performance with 11 kills in the win over Southwestern Illinois. The sophomore surpassed the 100-kill and 100-dig milestones for the year over the weekend.
Fellow sophomore Milica Peci (Namur, Belgium/Saint Jean Baptiste) produced a solid effort for the Warriors in the three wins. Peci totaled 12 aces, eight total blocks, and 25.0 total points on the weekend. Ana Luiza Caminha Matos (Betim, Brazil/Augusto de Lima) paced the offense from the setter position and tallied 74 assists and now ranks second in the nation with 10.4 assists/set on the year. Freshman Ana Silva (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil/Major Aviador José Mariotto) added relief at the setter position, tallying 43 assists over the three wins.
Next up for the Warriors is an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) showdown with Iowa Western Community College at 7:00 PM at the Hellyer Center in Ottumwa, IA.
