Mattoon, IL – No. 17 ranked Indian Hills Volleyball rolled to a 3-0 sweep in the semifinal round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Volleyball Midwest A District Tournament on Friday night, dropping John A. Logan College (IL) in straight sets. The Warriors advance to District title match Saturday morning.
Indian Hills will move on to the District championship match against Missouri State University – West Plains at 11:00 AM Saturday morning on the campus of Lake Land College (IL). The Grizzlies defeated tournament host Lake Land to set the stage with the Warriors.
The Warriors upended John A. Logan Friday night in the semifinal match in straight sets – 25-18, 25-17, and 25-22 to advance to the program's seventh consecutive District championship match. The Warriors will look to secure the team's fourth consecutive District title on Saturday and punch their ticket to the national tournament.
Indian Hills turned a slow start into a triumphant victory on Friday night against the Volunteers. Trailing 8-6 early on the, the Warriors used a quick 10-0 run to pull away from John A. Logan and never looked back.
Freshman Farah Sherif (Alexandria, Egypt/EGC), the reigning Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, led the offense with 17 kills to surpass the 300-kill milestone for the year. Sophomore Luana Silva Ferreira (Guimaraes, Portgual/Martins Sarmento) added nine kills on 17 attempts.
Sophomore Asialin Powell (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt), this week's ICCAC DI Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, tallied a career-high 33 digs to anchor the defense for the Warriors. Fellow sophomore Ana Luiza Caminha Matos (Betim, Brazil/Augusto de Lima) distributed 45 assists in the win for the Warriors and now ranks second in the nation with 1,079 assists on the year.
Indian Hills and Missouri State-West Plains, two national tournament qualifiers from a year ago were ranked No. 7 and No. 8, respectively in the preseason national rankings.
