Ottumwa, IA – No. 19 Indian Hills Volleyball used a quick start to carry the Warriors to a 3-0 sweep over Carl Sandburg College (IL) on Thursday night at the Hellyer Center. Indian Hills improves to 7-3 overall on the year.
Indian Hills collected its seventh consecutive victory, six of those by way of sweep, with the shutout of the Chargers. The Warriors move to 14-1 all-time vs. Carl Sandburg after taking the win in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-20.
13 different Warriors saw action on Thursday night. Sophomore Piper Nelson (Atkins, IA/Benton) powered home 10 kills while freshman Farah Sherif (Alexandria, Egypt/EGC), this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, tallied 11 finishers. Eight different players tallied at least two kills on the night.
Asialin Powell (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) continued to manage the defense, tying a career-high with 22 digs.
The Warriors set the tone early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set. Carl Sandburg pulled within one, 11-10, but the Warriors took the next five points and ran away for the initial lead. Indian Hills carried its momentum into the second set with a quick 7-1 advantage. The Warriors led by as many as nine and never looked back.
Carl Sandburg put up a fight in the final frame, leading 6-5 early on, but a kill from Aleksandra Oles (Tomaszów Lubelski, Poland/1 LO Tomaszów Lubelski) out of the media timeout tied the game at 15-15. The Warriors finished the set on a 15-6 run to claim the sweep.
Next up for Indian Hills is a trip to Mattoon, IL for the Lake Land Tournament hosted by Lake Land Community College (IL) September 12-13. Indian Hills will square off against Southwestern Illinois Community College on Friday before taking on Frontier Community College (IL) and Lake Land on Saturday.
